Our Journey to Finding the Best Toys Continues: A Recap

As we explored the world of play, we found that kitchen-themed toys were a hit with both kids. They loved creating their mini-kitchens, pretending to serve delicious meals, and even playfully collecting pretend money. This interest in money led us to discover another classic game, Monopoly. After a bit of trial and error, we found that both Monopoly and Life were winners, sparking friendly competition and a race to gather pretend wealth.

My older child loved pretending and could spend hours doing role-play, either alone or with friends. She showed leadership skills by taking charge of roles and guiding her playmates. My son, on the other hand, enjoyed putting things together, making crafts, and “managing money.” He was good at planning, executing tasks, and making things with a purpose.

One of our proudest achievements was making tent houses using bedsheets and clothespins. The younger child focused on the design, while the older one added cozy lights, a book corner, and soft pillows. Working together on this project perfectly combined their different interests.

While board games weren’t a regular part of our routine, we got into Monopoly and Life because they involved earning and managing money. We also enjoyed simple card games like Uno, Pictureka, Spot It, and Phase 10, along with traditional games like “Gulam Chor,” “Bluff,” and “Mongoose.”

As we built our collection of toys, we learned a few things to avoid having too many toys:

Try Different Approaches: If a toy doesn’t capture their interest, try playing with it in different ways. If it still doesn’t work, it’s okay. Not everything that looks fun is fun for them.

Balance Playtime: Some games are meant for playing alone, while others are better for playing together. Find a balance between the two and don’t force solo play on games meant for groups.

Remember, having fewer toys can be better. Choose a few toys that you think they might like, but also let them lead the way. Every child is unique. One might enjoy building with Lego for hours, while another might love imaginative play. Watch and learn from them.

You don’t need to take notes. Just pay attention to what they enjoy. Our home is now filled with Legos and craft supplies, most of which they use to create things from their imagination. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading about our journey. Keep exploring playtime with your child. Embrace the joy, curiosity, and endless possibilities that come with it.
